Strout’s novels, I am anxiously awaiting her next release. Though “Amy and Isabelle” was not my favorite of Elizabeth Strout’s novels, I enjoyed certain aspects of it and appreciated the complexities of all of the personalities within this book and how each was impacted by the decisions they made. Oh, how well Elizabeth Strout delves into the different facets of interpersonal relationships as a whole. Oh, the complicated relationship between a mother and daughter. Shamed by her past and her affair with Amys father she has submerged. Many folks in the town of Shirley Falls are keeping secrets of course, and they too suffer the consequences. Isabelle Goodrow has been living in self-imposed exile with her daughter Amy for 15 years. Isabelle beside herself, angry and desperate.Īctions, of course, have ramifications as both Isabelle and Amy soon devise.Īmy and Isabelle are not alone. She works hard at her job at the mill, eventually rising to become secretary to. Declaring she is a widow simply in search of a place to earn a living, Isabelle is accepted-if not embraced-by her neighbors. When Amy finds it, she becomes, shall we say, unfettered.Īmy, entangled with someone older, someone inappropriate, somehow who most certainly should know better.Īn awkward situation, discovered. In the small New England town of Shirley Falls, the arrival of Isabelle Goodrow and her infant daughter, Amy, stirs a bit of curiosity. Her daughter Amy longs for something more. Isabelle Goodrow is a prim and proper woman.
